Treating and Preventing Headlice
Active Week 2019
The staff and pupils of Scoil Mhuire Junior are gearing up for their 2019 Active Week starting on June 17th as part of the Department of Education and Skills and Healthy Ireland Initiative, which provides opportunities to bring physical activity into the classroom and school-yard. The school has been awarded with an Active Flag by the Department of Education and Skills because of its commitment to promoting and encouraging pupils to be more active and healthier with a wide range of annual activities. Active Week will be launched on Monday, 17th June with , Moorefield and Kildare Senior footballer, Adam Tyrrell at 9am, kick-starting a programme of physical activities , culminating with a School Fun Day. Co-ordinator, Rosarii Harty, in conjunction with the in-school organising committee hopes that the week will re-inforce the message that physical activity is not only good for you but it is also very enjoyable. The week provides an opportunity to raise awareness about the physical activity opportunities available in the locality as well as offering opportunities to work collaboratively with students, teachers and parents. Activities include GAA skills with coaches from both Sarsfield and Moorefield, gymnastics, dance activities with Brenda Malone, football skills training, yarn bomb trails, fun- run, visits by heritage expert and explorer, Vinnie Butler, bubble races as well as a series of in-class activities. Scoil Mhuire Junior is indebted to members of local sporting clubs and societies who volunteer their time and skills to make Active Week the most popular week in the school calendar and in particular its vibrant Parents Council who have fun-raised for the bouncy castles and many other treats during the year. It is hoped that this week will continue to improve attitudes of both children and parents towards physical activity and lay the foundations for positive, lifelong physical activity habits.
Creative Schools Project
Scoil Mhuire has had a busy year as a Creative School working with artists, creative practitioners and local cultural groups to develop a lively programme of arts and creative work. As one of four schools in Co. Kildare to be awarded Creative School status by The Arts Council, Scoil Mhuire Junior is delighted that its pupils have been given this opportunity to explore the life-skill of sewing and to use their imagination to create a colourful quilt which will be displayed in the foyer of the Riverbank Arts Centre during the month of June. Pupils have been busily sewing on flowers and cherry blossoms with the help of wonderful adult volunteers to celebrate the arrival of Junefest with all its explosion of creativity. This Creative Sewing Project which is entitled “The Secret Garden” Project is the culmination of a three month project with designer, Aideen Cross who is renowned for her design work in the area of fabric and fibre as well as her creative sewing workshops for young people.
The unveiling of the quilt was followed by a visit from Rua, the library mascot who visited classes to tell children about the upcoming Summer Stars Reading Programme which will be run in Newbridge library as well as the many free events and activities which are organised for local children during the Summer holiday period by Kildare Co. Council Library and Arts Services
The Creative Schools project has been funded by The Arts Council and will be launched as an in-school event by Arts Council co-ordinator, Susan Boyle on June 7th at 9.15 am. “We are deeply indebted to Linda and staff at the Riverbank Arts Centre and Kevin and staff at Newbridge library for their invaluable support as local cultural resources during our tenure as a Creative School” said a school spokesperson.
