Coding for kids
There are some wonderful resources which I encourage you to try out at home. Coding sounds like a scary word but computer science is on the up and we are educating children who know more about computers than we do! They will be looking for jobs in years to come, which have yet to be invented! These apps and websites use coding to create simple animations or games. They encourage problem-solving and logical thinking. I am aiming to give all the children some experience in coding before the summer holidays. You would be amazed what children of this age can achieve when they put their minds to it!
HOPSCOTCH: is an iPad app which uses simple blocks to animate characters on a stage. Learn more about it here.
SCRACTH: is a website which allows you to use blocks to move “sprites” or characters around the stage also. You can learn more here.
CODERDOJO: is a club for kids. There is a club in Naas and I would imagine that it’s only a matter of time before more clubs open locally. More information here.
If you have any questions about coding for kids, or indeed any ideas or extra information, please speak up! 🙂
Handa’s Surprise Stop Motion Video
We made a stop motion video in Room 12. Stop motion means that the object or person in the video makes very small movements and individual photos are taken of each movement. This is the technique used to make animations such as Wallace and Gromit. We decided to make a video based on the book Handa’s Surprise. Handa puts seven delicious fruits into a basket as a surprise for her friend Akeyo. But thanks to seven hungry animals, it’s Handa who gets the surprise! Watch the video here to find out the surprise! We took almost 300 photos in order to put this video together. The children worked very hard to make this video! Well done to all.
Parachute fun
The children had great fun playing co-operative games using a parachute. All the fun made for some amazing photos too if we do say so ourselves!!
Vegetable printing
We have learned lots about fruit during the last few weeks while reading Handa’s Surprise. We didn’t want to leave out their healthy cousins, the vegetable! We spent time look at the different vegetables; potatoes, broccoli, radishes and carrots! We then chopped them up and used the flat surfaces to make beautiful prints!
Easter Room 12
The children had excellent fun searching the school grounds for Easter Eggs. We also worked really hard to make bonnets and baskets for the bunny hop. We hope you liked them!
